Snap! Watch out for Nikon batteries that burn
April 25th, 2012
Nikon has recalled the rechargeable EN-EL15 Camera Battery, a Lithium ion battery to suit Nikon 1 V1, Nikon D800, Nikon D800E, and Nikon D7000 cameras.
The recall notice was issued yesterday by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission as well as Nikon.
It says that the melting of the protective battery cap and overheating of the battery may lead to a fire hazard, or at the least, overheating may deform the camera body.
Nikon Rumours has said that there have been no overheating cases reported from users, and that the problem has been discovered during the manufacturing process only.
In Australia the batteries were sold nationally in photography and electrical retailers from 1 March 2012 through until 15 April 2012.
Consumers have been encouraged by the company to to organise for return of the affected battery and for a replacement battery to be issued. Effected consumers can contact Nikon Australia on 1800 810 259 or by email at recall@nikon.com.au between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday (except public holidays).
Effected cameras have batch numbers with either one of the below sequences:Â 201XXXXXEXXXXX and 201XXXXXFXXXXX.
In other words, if the ninth digit of the lot number is E or F, the battery must be removed from the camera.
